Carroll's later years were consumed by the establishment and passing of the Drug Dealer's Civil Liabilities Act. Now known as the Hugh O'Connor Memorial Drug Law, it allows people who have lost a loved one to a drug-related death to seek a wrongful death suit against their drug dealer.

On the afternoon of June 21, 2001, with his wife of 50 years at his side, Carroll passed away from a heart attck caused by complications with diabetes. He died at the age of 76, three weeks shy of his 50th wedding anniversary.


Howard made good strides to kick his substance abuse problems and get his life back on the right track. However, as a result of his drug use, he developed lymphoma. He lost his brief battle with the disease on December 8, 1996 at the age of 46. HOWARD ROLLINS

The year after Heat ended, Alan and his wife Kimberlee welcomed their third child, Austin, in 1996. On November 7, 2000, he was elected mayor of Fresno, California. On March 2, 2004, he won re-election and will be serving until January, 2009.


David starred in a few made-for-TV movies, including 2002's The Legend Of Jake Kincaid, which was written and directed by fellow Heat co-star, Alan Autry. DAVID HART

Christian is currently playing the role of Michael Baldwin on the long-running soap opera The Young And The Restless. He has also Graduated with honors from Tulane University where he majored in ancient history and pre-med.

Geoffrey had a few guest appearances in various television shows, including Diagnosis Murder. He also starred as the "Big Orderly" in the 1998 film City Of Angeles


No matter how hard he tried, Hugh could not escape the recurring drug addiction and depression that plagued him from the age of 16. On the evening on March 28, 1995 at the age of 32, Hugh barricaded himself in his Pacific Palisades home, grabbed his pistol and ended his life. Moments later, his parents arrived on the scene, as well as a delivery of flowers sent by his wife. It was their third wedding anniversary. The series finale of In The Heat Of The Night, when originally aired on CBS in 1995, was dedicated to his memory. HUGH O'CONNOR
